Division of Human Life Studies

This graduate department is two-year master course corresponding to the undergraduate Department of Human Life Studies within the Faculty of Human Life Sciences. Students consist of alumni of this undergraduate department as well as those who graduated from other departments of our university and from other universities in different regions of Japan. Currently 10 students, both in the first and the second years of the master course, are studying in this department.

The curriculum consists of three major disciplines: Human Life, Life Environment and Life Welfare. The discipline of Human Life aims at the further understanding of the various aspects of human beings which are the very core of life. Subjects on ideas, religion, pedagogy, and environment are allocated within this course. The discipline of Life Environment concentrates on the upgrading the problem-solving ability for different items of actual life. Subjects on clothing, food, housing, and family, which are related to family and consumer sciences, are prepared for this course. The discipline of Life Welfare promotes the achievement of professional and directive abilitiesanswering to the current needs for social welfare. Subjects on disabilities, well-being, welfare policy andwelfare economy are allocated in this course.

Students are required to take subjects of all three disciplines in order to enable interdisciplinary researchactivities.

Those who finish this department are expected to contribute for local and global communities by way of environmental formation with creative mind, and to take initiatives in the actual fieldof social welfare as well as in the educational field of home economics and welfare studies by obtaining higher credentials.

In the midst of the transition from the age of quantity to that of quality, human life studies are the key to realize the value-oriented society in which human beings are considered irreplaceableresource.
